06-17-11 Mycology Note: Lichen Agaric

Lorinda Hunt's mycology note unfolds the symbiotic partnership between a fungi and an algae.

MPG North Mycology Note: Lichen agaric (Omphalina ericetorum) June 17, 2011 Lorinda Hunt
These lichen agarics (Omphalina ericetorum, Syn: Lichenomphalia umbellifera) grew in a mossy area underneath a young fir tree. Lichens are a symbiotic partnership between a fungi and an algae where each depends on the other for survival. In this particular association, lichen agaric comprises the fruiting body of the mushroom side and Botrydina vulgaris forms the algal counterpart.
